Delicatessen
"Nobody is entirely evil: it's that circumstances that make them evil, or they don't know they are doing evil."
Ty and I watched Delicatessen last night. I really love the movies of Jean-Pierre Jeunet. They all have this very beautiful, dream-like quality to them, even when they are about murderous, cannibalistic butchers. Along with my other ephemeral favorites, Amelie and City of Lost Children (which Jeunet got the money to produce by doing this film on a very tight budget), Delicatessen did not disappoint.
Something interesting I learned from imdb: Jean-Pierre Jeunet got the idea for the movie in 1988 while vacationing in America. He said after staying in America's hotels he felt the food was so bad that "it tasted like real humans". Then came the idea.
I really love the development of all the characters as well. The movie takes place in one building in which the butcher is also landlord to. His tenants all have unique, quirky personalities that I really enjoy. My favorite, in particular is Aurore, the suicidal, self-proclaimed schizophrenic.
This movie makes me miss the geagle Deli department and the antics ensued while I worked there...
